AWS – Synnex-Westcon

Founded in 1980, SYNNEX Corporation (NYSE: SNX), which includes the Westcon group, is an industry leader in IT distribution, providing comprehensive logistics, integration services and technology solutions to help our customers and business partners grow and improve your customer engagement strategies. SYNNEX is headquartered in Fremont, CA with global operations and is ranked 130th on the 2020 Fortune 200.

SYNNEX brings the most relevant technology solutions to the IT and electronics markets by distributing over 30,000 technology products from over 500 of the world’s leading and emerging manufacturers.

With thousands of monthly transactions and a distribution network involving multiple types of transport in each transaction, providing a forecast of when a product will be delivered is a daily challenge.

Due to the volume of data and the complexity of all the logistics required for a distribution operation of this magnitude, especially in Latin America, where deadlines can vary more frequently than in places where logistics are more predictable, Synnex needed a system tracking and delivery forecasting that resulted in greater accuracy and speed in tracking orders in real time.

Designing an analytics solution involves:
Understanding the business.
Establishing clear objectives.
Identifying data sources.
Structuring the ETL process, including information enrichment with predictive analytics.
Providing the means for analysis to be carried out straightforwardly.
IPsense used AWS solutions to structure the project’s data engineering, creating a data lake fed by information from different Synnex-Westcon processes.

By using services such as AWS Lake Formation Amazon S3, AWS Glue, Amazon SageMaker, AWS LakeFormation, AWS Lambda, Amazon Athena, Amazon QuickSight, and AWS API Gateway, to name a few, creating a fully automated, monitored, and scalable DataOps process.

The next step was to use Amazon SageMake to create, train and run machine learning models to predict delivery dates based on historical series stored as curated data in the data lake.

From accurate information provided by datalake on the status of each package within the global logistics chain, Synnex-Westcon was able to improve its processes, increasing the assertiveness of delivery forecasts, now performed with greater accuracy thanks to the unification of information in a single local, machine learning models trained automatically by the solution and the ease of retrieving information either directly via endpoints to connect to the datalake, or graphical visualization solutions such as Amazon QuickSight.

The end result was a 50% increase in the accuracy of delivery estimates, with a rapid ability to track packages independently of the original systems. With the new analytics model, it will be possible to anticipate problems and redefine routes to avoid delays, increasing the satisfaction of Synnex-Westcon’s customers and partners.
